The function of most punctuation commas, colons, semicolons, dashes, and so on is to help organize the relationships among the parts of a sentence. Its role is semantic, to add precision and complexity to meaning. It increases the information potential of words.

ABOUT JEFF RUBIN
National Punctuation Day® founder Jeff Rubin has written and designed more than 1,800 company newsletters since starting his newsletter publishing firm, The Newsletter Guy, in 1981.
Jeff taught newsletter writing and design at The Learning Annex in San Francisco and was a marketing consultant with the Concord (CA) Small Business Development Center.
